EMCO Chemical Inc., a producer and distributor of specialty industrial chemicals, ceased operations in 2023. At the City of Detroit’s request, EPA is removing hazardous substances from the former facility at 4470 Lawton Street. The initial assessment identified over 1,000 55-gallon drums, laboratory samples, and several large above-ground storage tanks.
During the cleanup, EPA will secure the site, monitor air quality as needed, and ensure only authorized personnel have access. Crews will inventory, assess, and dispose of drums, totes, and containers off-site. The cleanup is expected to be completed by this summer.
