On September 27, 2024, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Coast Guard Sector San Francisco Command Center received NRC notification regarding an incident that occurred in the Smith Canal, Stockton, CA.
An oil burner, with a 280 gallon capacity oil tank, was intentionally dumped into the Smith Canal discharging an unknown amount of oil. The Smith Canal is adjoined to the San Juaquin River, navigable waters of the United States. The area is a popular fishing and recreational area with constant human and wildlife presence.  It is also surrounded by residences.  Working together, the USCG conducted the H2O cleanup and EPA conducted the soil cleanup on the canal bank.  Many stakeholders supported the response including the State of CA and local Water District Board.
