The
US EPA was notified by a state of Texas report of a 5,000 gallon release of
Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) at the Pearland Water facility in Pearland, Texas.
The release occurred when a 6,000 gallon capacity tank was being filled. The
release entered the secondary containment, then released further into the
drainage path to the southwest and to the east into Clear Creek. The facility
has indicated 500 gallons remained in the tank, but they could not give an
estimate of the volume remaining in the secondary containment or the amount
that was released into the drainage path or Clear Creek. County
Hazmat, responding to the incident, indicated the city has a contractor
responding at the site. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
was also notified of the incident.
The EPA is responding to the incident and coordinating with state and local
response partners.
There are residential homes immediately adjacent and southwest of the facility.
