The Newton County Mine Tailings Superfund site, listed on the National Priorities List, encompasses all of Newton County, Missouri, where historical lead mining activities have impacted surface soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater.
The Time-Critical Removal Action took place at the site to address surface soil lead contamination at residential properties referred to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The scope of the Removal Action included excavation of contaminated soil, backfilling excavated areas to original grade with clean fill, and restoring the property to previous conditions.
The objective of the Removal Action was to reduce the risk and/or prevent the exposure of sensitive populations through inhalation, dermal contact, and/or ingestion to lead and/or other heavy metals present in surface soil at the Site.
The Removal Action involved the excavation and off property transportation of approximately 3,871 cubic yards of lead-contaminated soil exceeding the cleanup level of 200 parts per million. A separate Removal Action is planned for 2026 to address additional residential properties referred in 2026.
