On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the EPA National Response Center passed a report to EPA Region 8 regarding a mercury spill in Littleton, Colorado. The spill occurred at a single-family home where two people reside. It was contained to one residence and EPA does not anticipate further contamination.

A beaker with approximately 100-125 milliliters of elemental, or liquid, mercury spilled onto a hardwood floor in the home's living room. The residents immediately evacuated and called 911, after which the South Metro Fire Department arrived on-scene and began conducting a cleanup. The department left a double-sealed container of mercury that it collected inside the home overnight for EPA's assessment.

EPA mobilized to the site in the early morning of Monday, December 15, to screen the home for mercury vapors with specialized equipment and conduct additional cleanup. EPA and its contractors are actively cleaning and reassessing the site. The response is ongoing.

Elemental mercury  vaporizes and breathing in mercury vapor is dangerous. If mercury spills, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Instead, call the EPA National Response Center: (800) 424-8802.
