Description:

This four-hour exercise is an introductory/intermediate course on oil spills and emergency response presented by The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (OKDEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund and Emergency Management (OSEM). The course will be delivered in three parts:

  1. A presentation covering the statutory authorities that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses to respond to oil spills followed by an OKDEQ case study;
  2. Oil response training followed by a discussion-based tabletop exercise focused on a gas station fuel spill. The tabletop exercise will have one module, which will have a set of discussion questions related to the scenario. The scenario will feature a gas station oil spill as a severe thunderstorm moves into the area;
  3. Putting theory into practice with a field exercise, participants will go out in the “field” (parking lot outside the hotel) where The Choctaw Nation will lead a “spill drill.” Using The Choctaw oil spill trailer and spill equipment participants will observe what they just learned in action and see demonstrations of how the equipment is used.
